Espresso Machine Electrical Requirements: Voltage, Amperage, and Outlets

Most home espresso machines are simple to power, but higher-wattage prosumer machines are worth checking against your outlet and circuit before you buy, not after.

Standard voltage

Home machines sold in the US market typically run on standard 120V household power; always confirm the voltage documented for your specific model and region before use, especially if you are importing a machine designed for a different market's voltage standard.

Watch the wattage on a shared circuit

Some prosumer machines draw 1300–1600W or more; running one on a circuit shared with other high-draw appliances (a microwave, toaster, or space heater on the same breaker) can trip a breaker, especially during the initial heat-up when draw is highest. Check your machine's documented wattage against your kitchen circuit if you plan to run it alongside other appliances.

Dedicated outlets are a nice-to-have, not usually required

Most home installations do not need a dedicated circuit, but if you are renovating a kitchen specifically for a prosumer machine, checking the manufacturer's documented electrical requirements first avoids a surprise mid-project, particularly for machines with unusually high steady-state or peak wattage.

A quick pre-purchase check

Before buying a higher-wattage prosumer machine, check what else typically runs on the same kitchen circuit during your morning routine. If a microwave or kettle already regularly trips that breaker, adding a 1500W-plus espresso machine to the same circuit is worth planning around in advance rather than discovering on day one.
