Where to Put Your Espresso Machine in the Kitchen

Espresso machine placement is easy to treat as an afterthought until you are elbow-deep in beans with nowhere to put a portafilter down.

Leave clearance above and behind

Check your manual's documented clearance requirements — many machines need space above for tank refills or bean hopper access, and behind for ventilation and cord routing. A machine crammed under a low cabinet is a common and entirely avoidable source of daily frustration.

Plan the workflow, not just the footprint

A good spot has room for a grinder next to the machine, a knock box or bin within reach of the portafilter, and a scale that does not need to be moved for every shot. Think through the actual physical motion of making a shot — grind, dose, tamp, lock in, pull, dispose of the puck — before committing to a spot that looks fine empty but is cramped in use.

Keep water and beans equally close

A machine far from your water source or bean storage adds friction to daily use that adds up — proximity to both matters as much as proximity to an outlet, and is more often overlooked during initial kitchen planning.

A quick placement checklist

Outlet within reach without an extension cord — clearance above for the tank or hopper — a grinder-sized gap beside it if using a separate grinder — a spot for a knock box or bin — and, ideally, not directly under a cabinet that blocks steam or heat dispersion during use.

This guide is general information to help you use and choose espresso equipment. It is not a substitute for your machine's manual — always follow the manufacturer's own instructions for your specific model.
